Sherman Lewis replaces Jim Zorn as Washington Redskins play caller

The Washington Redskins said Monday that Sherman Lewis will take over the play calling for an offense that is averaging only 13.2 points per game.

The front office stripped Coach Jim Zorn of the play-calling role after Sunday’s 14-6 loss to previously winless Kansas City. The Redskins are 2-4, and they have failed to score a touchdown in two of their home games.

Lewis previously spent 22 years as an NFL assistant and was originally hired as a consultant for the Redskins’ offense.

Worker falls

A worker at Qualcomm Stadium tumbled out of the press box and fell approximately 25-30 feet to the cement, apparently sustaining serious injuries.

The San Diego Chargers identified the man as Walt Daniels, a game-day staff member. The incident happened at about 2:35 p.m., before the team’s game against Denver. Paramedics performed CPR on Daniels for several minutes before transporting him to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego.

Witnesses say Daniels, who fell out of a coaches’ box, appeared to suffer a massive head injury.

Panthers get Tyler

The Carolina Panthers have added depth at defensive tackle, sending an undisclosed draft pick to the Kansas City Chiefs for Tank Tyler. The deal late Monday, a day before the NFL’s trading deadline, gives the Panthers more options on the defensive line after the season-ending injury to Maake Kemoeatu in training camp.

Wesley suspended

The NFL suspended Panthers special teams player Dante Wesley one game without pay for launching himself into defenseless Tampa Bay returner Clifton Smith.

Wesley left his feet and hit Smith in the neck and head with his forearm and shoulder as Smith waited to field a punt late in the second quarter on Sunday.

Smith sustained a concussion and both benches emptied onto the field. Wesley was immediately ejected.

Injury update

Bills quarterback Trent Edwards needs further evaluation after sustaining the second concussion of his NFL career, leaving the starter’s status uncertain for Buffalo’s game at Carolina this weekend.

Atlanta Falcons cornerback Brian Williams will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury suffered in Sunday night’s win over the Chicago Bears.

New York Jets nose tackle Kris Jenkins has been placed on season-ending injured reserve with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Antwan Odom had surgery for a torn Achilles’ tendon, ending his season and leaving the Cincinnati Bengals with a big hole on their defensive line.

Veteran San Francisco linebacker Jeff Ulbrich won’t play again this season because of a concussion. The 49ers placed the 32-year-old Ulbrich on injured reserve, ending his season.

Baltimore Ravens defensive back Samari Rolle almost certainly won’t play this season because of a neck injury. The 33-year-old Rolle was placed on the physically unable to perform list in August with hopes he might return, but surgery didn’t correct the problem.

Jaguars cornerback Rashean Mathis has a broken index finger on his left hand and might need surgery to repair ligament damage.

Seahawks Coach Jim Mora said further tests on three-time Pro Bowl linebacker Lofa Tatupu’s chest muscle indicated a partial tear rather than a complete one, meaning he may not miss the rest of the season.
