Delonte West arrested in Maryland

Cleveland Cavaliers guard Delonte West was arrested Thursday in Upper Marlboro, Md., after officers pulled him over for speeding on a motorcycle while carrying two loaded handguns and a loaded shotgun in a guitar case.

Prince George’s County police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Reedy said Friday that West was arrested about 10 p.m. Thursday.

Reedy said West was riding a Can-Am Spyder motorcycle north on the Capital Beltway in Upper Marlboro when he cut off an officer, who pulled him over.

Police said a handgun was found in his pocket, another in his pant leg and a shotgun in a guitar case strapped to his back.

Reedy said West “was very cooperative, there were no issues” during the incident.

The 26-year-old West, who lives in Brandywine, was charged with speeding and weapons counts. It is illegal to carry concealed weapons and to transport loaded guns in Maryland, according to police. Reedy said West was released on his own recognizance early Friday.

Greece, Slovenia reach semifinals

Ender Arslan missed a potential game-winning shot as time expired, and Greece hung on for a 76-74 overtime victory over Turkey in Katowice, Poland, to reach the European basketball championship semifinals.

Slovenia defeated Croatia, 67-65, in another quarterfinal behind center Erazem Lorbek’s 27 points and eight rebounds.

In today’s semifinals, it’s Greece-Spain and Serbia-Slovenia. After a 5-0 start in the tournament, Turkey, led by Toronto Raptors star Hedo Turkoglu, lost its last two in the closing seconds and can finish no better than fifth.

Dixon takes IndyCar series lead with win

New Zealand’s Scott Dixon won the Indy Japan 300 earlier today to take over the IndyCar series points lead with one race remaining. Dixon, who started from the pole position and led for most of the race, took over the lead for good on the 164th lap and finished 1.4475 seconds ahead of Target Chip Ganassi teammate Dario Franchitti for his fifth win of the season.

Juan Pablo Montoya will have a hard time playing the role of dark horse if he keeps driving like this.

The former Formula One star will make his debut in NASCAR’s Chase for the championship from the pole after setting a track record at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, N.H.

Montoya turned a lap at 133.431 mph on the 1.058-mile oval, breaking the mark of 133.357 set by Ryan Newman in 2003.

NHL

Ducks rally to defeat Phoenix in overtime

Defenseman Luca Sbisa scored on a power play 1:23 into overtime to cap the Ducks’ four-goal rally in a 4-3 exhibition victory over the host Phoenix Coyotes.

Joffrey Lupul scored twice and Dan Sexton added a goal as the Ducks scored three times in a 9:51 span of the third period to force overtime.

The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired the rights to Phil Kessel after months of talks with the Boston Bruins and then signed him to a five-year, $27-million deal Friday. Toronto sent a first and second-round pick in the 2010 draft to Boston, along with another first-round pick in 2011.

New York Islanders forward Pascal Morency has been suspended indefinitely after leaving the bench to start a fight with Calgary defenseman Dion Phaneuf. No date for a hearing with the NHL has been set.

Stepanek wins in Davis Cup semifinal

Radek Stepanek overcame a record 78 aces to defeat Ivo Karlovic in five sets in one of the longest matches in tennis history, giving the Czech Republic a 1-0 lead over Croatia in the Davis Cup semifinals in Porec, Croatia.

Stepanek won, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 7-6 (6), 6-7 (2), 16-14, in a match that lasted 5 hours 59 minutes. The longest known Davis Cup match was 6 hours 22 minutes between John McEnroe and Mats Wilander in 1982. The 82 games equaled the Davis Cup record since tiebreakers were introduced in 1989.

Karlovic wasted four match points in the final set. Stepanek won when the 6-foot-10 Croat sent a smash wide. There were only five break-point chances in the match.

Roger Federer rolled to a 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 win over Simone Bolelli to give Switzerland a 2-0 lead against Italy in the Davis Cup playoffs in Genoa, Italy. Stanislas Wawrinka defeated Andreas Seppi, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2, in the first match on the red clay courts at the Valletta Cambiaso club.

SURFING

Hurley Pro to continue today

The Hurley Pro, an Assn. of Surfing Professionals World Tour contest, will run through completion today at Lower Trestles in San Clemente.

Competition, which had been suspended for three days because of lack of surf, will begin with the fourth round at 7 a.m. The final will be held at about 2:30 p.m.
