Broncos linebacker Elvis Dumervil could be out for season
Denver Broncos linebacker Elvis Dumervil’s season might be over before it begins because of a torn chest muscle.
A person familiar with the injury to Dumervil told the Associated Press on Thursday that the reigning NFL sacks leader could be sidelined for up to five months, making it difficult for him to return this season. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Coach Josh McDaniels said the team is evaluating courses of treatment for Dumervil and that there is no timetable for his return. Surgery has not been ruled out.
Dumervil was hurt at practice Wednesday night during a passing drill and walked off the field clutching his right arm. The Broncos said the injury was the “pectoral area of his chest.”
Dumervil, 26, led the league with 17 sacks in 2009 and parlayed his breakout season into a five-year, $58.3-million extension last month that included $43.2 million in guarantees against injury, a record for a player at his position.
“Nobody is going to replace him as an individual. We know that,” McDaniels said. “We’re not going to try to do that.”
Texans’ Johnson signs extension
Andre Johnson got the deal he wanted and says he’s committed to playing for the Houston Texans for his entire career.
The All-Pro receiver signed a two-year extension that will keep him in Houston through the 2016 season.
Neither the Texans nor Johnson’s agent, Kennard McGuire, would disclose terms. The Houston Chronicle and KRIV-TV reported that Johnson’s extension had a maximum value of $38.5 million, including $13 million guaranteed.
Goodell, Roethlisberger meet
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell met with Ben Roethlisberger while visiting the Pittsburgh Steelers’ training camp at Latrobe, Pa., but while saying the quarterback is going beyond what the league is mandating, did not cut his suspension for bad behavior from six games to four.
The NFL will continue to monitor Roethlisberger’s progress before he and Goodell meet in New York later this month and the commissioner makes a final decision how long the Steelers star will be out.
Etc.
The Washington Redskins ordered an MRI on Albert Haynesworth’s sore left knee, and Coach Mike Shanahan said he is adamant about having the two-time All-Pro defensive tackle pass the team’s conditioning test before he can practice. … Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marcus Spears suffered a sprained knee ligament at practice and is expected to sit out four to six weeks … Receiver Antonio Bryant won’t play in the Cincinnati Bengals’ preseason opener Sunday against Dallas because of a bad knee. … Arizona Cardinals tight end Ben Patrick is expected to be out for a few weeks after he injured his left kneecap in practice Wednesday night.
