Mets’ Francisco Rodriguez has torn ligament in his right thumb

New York Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez has a torn ligament in his right thumb, and it has been recommended that he have surgery, the team said Monday. A date for the procedure, which reportedly would sideline Rodriguez for the rest of the season, has not been set.

It is unclear how Rodriguez was injured, but several media outlets reported that he hurt the thumb Wednesday, when he is accused of hitting his girlfriend’s father after a loss to the Colorado Rockies. He was taken into custody by police and released a day later, then was suspended by the Mets for two games.

Rays activate Pena

Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Carlos Pena was activated from the 15-day disabled list, and outfielder Gabe Kapler was placed on the 15-day DL retroactive to Sunday. Pena had been on the DL since Aug. 1 because of a sprain in his right foot. Kapler has a sprained right ankle.

The Texas Rangers put outfielder Nelson Cruz, who has a left hamstring strain, on the 15-day disabled list. . . . Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard (sprained ankle) is unlikely to be activated from the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, the first day he is eligible to return, Manager Charlie Manuel said. . . . The Baltimore Orioles put reliever Jason Berken on the 15-day DL because of inflammation in his right shoulder.
