Brewers pitcher Yovani Gallardo robbed at gunpoint

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Yovani Gallardo and clubhouse attendant Alex Sanchez were robbed at gunpoint early Friday in Milwaukee, hours after Gallardo pitched in a loss to the Dodgers.

“It was a scary moment for me, obviously for me and Alex, and those are tough situations,” Gallardo said. “Things like that happen in every city, anywhere you go and it’s just unfortunate that it happened to me and him.”

Milwaukee police were investigating but didn’t have a suspect. …

Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia said his injured left foot is not healing quickly and that surgery may be required.

Kariya won’t play this season

Veteran winger Paul Kariya, an unrestricted free agent, will sit out the 2010-11 NHL season.

“After being examined by concussion specialist Dr. Mark Lovell, Paul is not able to play hockey due to post-concussion syndrome,” his agent, Don Baizley, said.

Kariya, 35, played for the St. Louis Blues last season and had 18 goals and 43 points in 75 games. Kariya, who was a prolific scorer in nine seasons with the Ducks, scored his 400th NHL goal in March. …

Deputy commissioner Bill Daly said the New Jersey Devils submitted a new contract to the league for Ilya Kovalchuk. The league has five days to approve or reject the deal, which reportedly is for $100 million over 15 years. A month ago, the NHL rejected a 17-year, $102-million contract for Kovalchuk, saying it violated the league salary cap. …

Edmonton Oilers goalie Nikolai Khabibulin was found guilty on charges stemming from a DUI arrest in February in Scottsdale, Ariz., and faces up to six months in jail when he is sentenced Tuesday. …

Times sports columnist Bill Dwyre won three awards in the annual United States Tennis Writers’ Assn. writing contest. He won first place in the game story/pro tennis category with his report on the U.S. Open match between Rafael Nadal and Robert Gasquet. Some of the country’s top high school basketball players will be in Venice Beach this weekend for the 2010 Boost Mobile Elite 24 game. The event, which took place previously at New York City’s famed Rucker Park, features 24 of the top underclassmen in the nation, including Woodland Hills Taft forward DeAndre Daniels. The Elite 24 game will be played Saturday at 4:30 p.m. on the Venice Beach courts located at 1800 Ocean Front Walk. It is free to the public.
