High school football: Previewing Saturday’s state championship bowl games

Division II final

Gardena Serra (14-0) vs. Folsom (13-1), Home Depot Center, 3:30 p.m., Fox Sports West. There are probably more college-bound players in this game than in any other bowl game of the weekend, which should make for a high-scoring, fan-pleasing finale. Serra, led by USC-bound George Farmer, a big-play receiver and big-hitting defensive back, is trying to go 30-0 the last two seasons. Folsom has 5-foot-9 quarterback Dano Graves, who has passed for 59 touchdowns and run for 20, plus a couple of receivers who have committed to Stanford and Oregon State. Most impressive about Folsom is that it eliminated Sacramento Grant, once considered the No. 1 team in the state. The pick: Serra.

Anaheim Servite (14-0) vs. Concord De La Salle (13-0), Home Depot Center, 7:30 p.m., Fox Sports West. De La Salle is the only school to have played in all five CIF state championship bowl games. Its legendary coach, Bob Ladouceur, insisted in a phone conversation this week that he was having trouble finding any weaknesses in Servite. That’s a nice compliment, but don’t believe for one minute that the Spartans are feeling in trouble. They came here last year and beat Crenshaw, 28-14. They are known for running the ball and have an effective passer in junior Bart Houston. Servite’s offense is immensely improved since the season began, with junior quarterback Cody Pittman having grown up and senior running back Malik Felton emerging as a standout. The pick: Servite.

Division III final: Escalon (13-1) vs. San Diego Madison (12-1), Home Depot Center, noon, Fox Sports West.
