Fumbles doom Madison in Division III
San Diego Madison fumbled six times, losing four of them, in a 30-14 loss to Escalon in pouring rain in the Division III state bowl.
Kevon Mitchell caught a 60-yard touchdown pass from Chase Knox that pulled the Warhawks (12-2) to within 9-7 with 7:37 left in the first half.
Brandon Shaw caught a 42-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Gino Franceschetti to give Escalon a 23-7 lead with 12 seconds left in the first half.
Trailing, 23-7, Madison drove to the Escalon 10-yard line with 2:47 left in the third quarter, but Knox fumbled on fourth down and Escalon took over.
Franceschetti faked a handoff and trotted into the end zone from six yards out to give the Cougars (14-1) a commanding 30-7 lead with 3:21 left in the fourth quarter.
Josh Miguel scored on runs of six and nine yards in the first half for Escalon.
