Mexican World Cup roster named

Mexican national soccer team coach Javier Aguirre released his country’s preliminary World Cup roster Tuesday.

Among the 17 selected were goalkeeper Memo Ochoa, defenders Efrain Juarez and Jonny Magallon and forwards Cuauhtemoc Blanco and Javier Hernandez, and No. 3 goalkeeper Oscar Perez. Perez, 37, played for Aguirre’s World Cup team in 2002.

Cubs release Kevin Millar

The Chicago Cubs released Kevin Millar on Tuesday, giving their final roster spot to infielder Chad Tracy.

Jamie Moyer has won the fifth spot in the Philadelphia Phillies’ rotation, the team announced.

The Florida Marlins acquired left-hander Nate Robertson from the Detroit Tigers for left-hander Jay Voss.

Holmes denies hurting woman

Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Santonio Holmes denies hurting a woman who says he threw a glass at her in an Orlando, Fla., nightclub and claims another woman hit her with the cup, according to a police report released Tuesday.

Holmes told an Orlando Police Department officer that the alleged victim, Anshonae Mills, grabbed his wrist and called him a racial name after he asked for his seat back in Club Rain this month.

Former Vikings great Carl Eller has lost an appeal of his conviction stemming from a 2008 arrest on suspicion of drunk driving. The Minnesota Court of Appeals affirmed the conviction of Eller for assault and refusing to submit to a chemical test.

Kicker Jason Elam will sign a one-day contract with Denver so he can retire with the team. Elam played 15 seasons with the Broncos.

Federer is upset by Berdych

Roger Federer was upset by Tomas Berdych in the fourth round of the Sony Ericsson Open at Key Biscayne, Fla., 6-4, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (6).

At the same event, Venus Williams beat Agnieszka Radwanska, 6-3, 6-1.

Caster Semenya announced plans to return to competition this season even though track and field’s ruling body has yet to release results from the runner’s gender tests.

She hasn’t raced since winning the women’s 800 meters at the world championships in August, when a dramatic improvement in times and muscular build led the International Assn. of Athletics Federations to order gender tests.

A lawyer for WBC lightweight champion Edwin Valero says the boxer has entered a rehab center for treatment of drug and alcohol addiction.
