San Pedro hopes to reclaim City baseball title

Over the last 37 seasons, San Fernando Valley teams have won every City Section Division I baseball championship except one. In 1992, San Pedro won the championship, and the Pirates (24-5) will try again to break up the Valley domination when facing Woodland Hills El Camino Real (18-11) in Saturday’s 1 p.m. final at Dodger Stadium.

The home-run ball has been critical in San Pedro’s playoff success. It was Ronnie Galosic’s three-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth that enabled the Pirates to beat San Fernando, 10-9, in their playoff opener. Galosic added a two-run home run to beat Arleta, 3-1, in the quarterfinals. And Danny Matienzo’s three-run home run helped knock off Chatsworth, 8-5, in the semifinals.

Clearly, San Pedro and El Camino Real were the best hitting teams in the City Section, which could lead to a slugfest at Dodger Stadium considering both teams will be using their No. 2 pitchers, Mitch Bluman for El Camino Real and Matt Zuvich for San Pedro.

El Camino Real has won five City championships. The Conquistadores started the season 4-8 but have been playing so well lately that they haven’t made a single error in three playoff victories. Bluman has 40 runs batted in and leads the team with a .464 batting average.

In the Division II final, Westchester (21-8) will play Venice (19-11) at 10 a.m.
