Baron Davis can’t play yet, but at least he can laugh

Share

Clippers guard Baron Davis, slowed by a sore left knee, went through his first full practice with contact Sunday and afterward rattled off answers to questions about the team’s performance through three exhibition games.

Then, forward Blake Griffin poked his head into the media faction, a query on his mind. “And how do you feel you’ve played, personally?” Griffin asked.

“Uh, I haven’t played at all,” Davis said.

“Oh yeah, that’s right,” Griffin said, laughing.

Davis, whether because of knee or conditioning concerns, hasn’t played a preseason minute, but he said there is no longer swelling in his knee and that he’ll know after practice Monday whether he can play in Tuesday’s game against San Antonio in Mexico City.

Whenever he plays, Davis said he needs to get some floor time to regain his rhythm. “Two good preseason games for me with some minutes will really help where I need to be, but in no way, shape or form am I worried,” he said.

Coach Vinny Del Negro doesn’t appear to be either. “We’re just building him up,” Del Negro said. “His conditioning is getting better. His weight is getting better. Really it’s just a matter of getting him out there.”

Ups and downs

Del Negro said he puts little stock in the erratic final scores of the Clippers’ first three games, which included a 29-point loss, a 32-point win, and a 40-point defeat Friday to Golden State.

He noted that some players have sat out due to injury (Davis) or just to rest ( Chris Kaman against the Warriors), and that he’s been working with various rotations, depending on who’s available each night.

“Hopefully in the last three or four [exhibition games] we can get everybody out and try to get some kind of rotation,” Del Negro said.

Griffin, who has averaged 16.7 points and 9.7 rebounds, attributes the wild swings partly to the games’ occurring in rapid succession.

“Three games in four nights, that’s good to get on in the preseason, so we’ll know what to expect a little bit in the regular season,” he said.
