Worn-out Nadal upset in Shanghai

Weary in body and mind, Rafael Nadal knows there are days when his game simply fails to rise to the moment.

Nadal, winner of three Grand Slam tournament titles this year, lost to Austria’s Jurgen Melzer, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, Thursday in the third round of the Shanghai Masters in China. It was the first time this year the top-ranked Spaniard failed to reach the quarterfinals.

Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray all won third-round matches.

Ana Ivanovic defeated Zahlavova Strycova, 6-3, 6-2, to reach the quarterfinals of the Generali Ladies tournament in Linz, Austria.

Up next for Ivanovic is Julia Goerges, who beat fifth-seeded Petra Kvitova, 6-2, 6-1. Second-seeded Daniela Hantuchova beat Carla Suarez Navarro.

At the Japan Women’s Open in Osaka, Israel’s Shahar Peer beat Ryoko Fuda, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinals. American Jill Craybas advanced by beating Olga Savchuk of Ukraine.

Kimiko Date Krumm routed Aiko Nakamura to set up a quarterfinal against defending champion and top-seeded Samantha Stosur of Australia.

Hole in one lifts Mediate

Rocco Mediate had a hole in one on the par-three third hole and shot a bogey-free seven-under-par 64 to top the leaderboard in the first round of the Frys. com Open in San Martin, Calif.

Paul Goydos, Bo Van Felt and Ryuji Imada opened with 65s, and John Mallinger, Michael Letzig, Will MacKenzie and Shaun Micheel had 66s.

Brittany Lincicome shot an 11-under 61, recording the tour’s best round of the season on the first day of the CVS/Pharmacy LPGA Challenge at Danville, Calif.

ALCS, NLCS umpires named

Major League Baseball named Gerry Davis and Derryl Cousins umpire crew chiefs for the two league championship series.

Davis will head the crew for the ALCS between New York and Texas. Brian Gorman, Angel Hernandez, Fieldin Culbreth, Jim Reynolds and Tony Randazzo round out his crew.

On Cousins’ crew for the NLCS between Philadelphia and San Francisco are Tom Hallion, Wally Bell, Ted Barrett, Jeff Nelson and Dan Iassogna.

Former All-Star pitcher Matt Keough was sentenced in a Santa Ana court to a year in jail for driving drunk near his Orange County home. He got 194 days of credit for time served and good behavior.

Unbeaten junior-lightweight Eloy Perez (18-0-2) of Salinas, Calif., will fight Rialto’s Dominic Salcido (18-2) in the main event of a boxing card at Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio on Friday.

East Los Angeles prospect Frankie Gomez (6-0, six knockouts) will also be on the TeleFutura-televised card vs. Ramon Montano.

The City Section postponed cross-country dual meets scheduled for Thursday at Pierce College in Woodland Hills because of predicted high temperatures, according to a spokeswoman for the City athletics office. The meets are to be held on Monday.

Two weeks ago, Superintendent Ramon C. Cortines criticized sports officials for allowing a meet to be run during scorching temperatures at Pierce. A dozen high school runners were treated for heat-related issues.
