Son charged in slaying of ICE agent

The 14-year-old son of an ICE agent was charged Friday with killing his father, and the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office says prosecutors will now push to have the boy tried as an adult.

The teenager, who has not been identified by authorities, is due in Compton Juvenile Court on Monday for arraignment, Deputy Dist. Atty. Todd Hicks said in a statement. The youth also faces an allegation that he used a firearm to kill his father, the district attorney’s office said.

Authorities allege that the boy fatally shot his father, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Myron W. Chisem, striking him once in the head Wednesday night as the 42-year-old sat in the family room watching TV. Police said the shot was fired from the backyard of the family’s home in Carson.

The son called 911, county Sheriff’s Department officials said, and deputies found Chisem’s ICE-issued handgun in the frontyard. Authorities have declined to say whether the teenager told dispatchers that he had shot his father.

The youth is believed to have been angry after being disciplined for misbehaving, according to law enforcement sources.

Chisem’s friend Shawn Butler has said that there “was never any indication” of trouble between father and son. He said the boy had moved in with his father less than a year ago after a family agreement.

“They had a great relationship,” Butler said. “He was very proud of his son. He loved him very much.... All the time I had been around them I had never seen any kind of issues of tension between them.”

District attorney’s spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said it was not yet clear whether prosecutors would seek a first-degree murder charge or a lesser count. She noted that with the added firearm allegation, the teenager would face a lengthy sentence if convicted of murder as an adult.

A memorial service for the agent will probably be scheduled for next week, a family friend said.
