Mikaela Shiffrin of the U.S. is the favorite to give the U.S. its first gold in women’s slalom since Barbara Ann Cochran in 1972. Shiffrin is the defending world champion and World Cup event champion. Among those most likely to challenge her are Frida Hansdotter of Sweden and Marlies Schild of Austria.

It’s a battle of friendly neighbors as the tournament reaches the semifinal stage. The U.S. and Canada play in one of the games. The winner will come out as the favorite in Sunday’s gold-medal final. It’s also a rematch of the gold-medal game in Vancouver. Sweden and Finland play in the other game.
