John Mayer’s haircut: Getting over Katy Perry -- or grooming?

John Mayer’s haircut is making a philosopher out of everyone — or mostly media outlets trying to pin the trim to his breakup with Katy Perry.

We use “breakup” gently, as the two singers had only enjoyed a handful of public outings, dinner date nights and afternoon pool parties before their parting of ways was reported last week.

“She’s really upset about it,” wrote Us magazine, citing a source close to Perry. On Saturday, Mayer stepped out to support Mindy Kaling’s new Fox comedy, “The Mindy Project,” his shoulder-length brown hair chopped short.

“That’s one way to get someone out of your hair!” declared People magazine, drumming up the cliche that life events like a breakup inspire drastic changes to our looks.  Or was Mayer simply tired of the 10-gallon hats and wanted a shorter ‘do (pictured above)?

The Ministry attended Kaling’s fete, hosted by Vitaminwater at the Mondrian hotel’s Skybar. Mayer is pals with the funnygal and her crew, comics like Aziz Ansari, BJ Novak and Ellie Kemper.

If he was nursing any emotional wounds we certainly couldn’t tell, as the “Shadow Days” singer enjoyed lively conversation and a few beers on the patio.

Perry spent her Saturday in high spirits too, visiting Disneyland for rides and a bite with girlfriends. So if we’re still looking for symbolism in a coif, we’d guess Katy is happy: She accessorized with mouse ears
