ABC renews ‘Last Man Standing,’ adds two new comedies

“Last Man Standing” isn’t getting weak in the knees just yet. ABC renewed the Friday comedy for another season -- and added two new comedies, “Fresh Off the Boat” and a quasi-autobiographical half-hour from stand-up comedian Cristela Alonzo, to its 2014-15 slate.

The Tim Allen-fronted “Last Man Standing” has stood its ground in its 8 p.m. Friday slot, bringing in a 1.3 in the advertiser-cherished 18-49 demo. It will return for a fourth season, bringing its episode count within syndication reach.

The Friday laffer will have two more new comedies to rub shoulders with on ABC.

Fellow multi-camera half-hour “Cristela,” starring Alonzo, tells the story of an American Latina law student torn between the old culture of her traditional Mexican American family and the modern world she’s trying to embrace. Alonzo wrote and exec produced alongside Kevin Hench.

Then there’s “Fresh Off the Boat,” from Nahnatchka Khan (“Don’t Trust the B---- in Apartment 23”), which is based on Eddie Huang’s memoir of the same name. The single-camera comedy centers on a hip-hop enthusiast (Hudson Yang) as he grows up in suburban Orlando, Fla., raised by an immigrant father. Culture shock inevitably ensues. Khan writes and executive produces alongside Jake Kasdan and Melvin Mar.

The additions of the “Cristela” and “Fresh Off the Boast” bring ABC’s tally of new comedies to six.
