Upfronts 2014: CW splits power couple ‘The Originals,’ “Supernatural’

Share

The CW unveiled its prime-time schedule for the 2014-2015 season Thursday morning -- and like a teenager too stubborn to clean its room, there wasn’t much movement.

The often-overlooked broadcast network has all but demanded attention this season -- finally cracking Tuesdays with the combination of “The Vampire Diaries” spinoff “The Originals” and nine-year veteran “Supernatural.” Another feather in the network’s cap came earlier this week when the finale of “The Originals” surpassed the finale of Fox’s “Glee” in the ratings.

In a somewhat surprising move, the network is splitting the power couple. The question is, will the momentum fade with the series apart, or amplify freshman entrants?

The CW will enter the upcoming season with three new dramas and one new comedy -- two of which will roll out in the fall, soap “Jane the Virgin” and “Arrow” spinoff “The Flash.”

The network seems to have developed a fondness for the late-launch October premiere strategy that it has implemented the last couple of seasons -- keeping its shows from drowning in the noise of the traditional premiere weeks in September. It will do so again this season.

Here’s an overview of the 2014-2015 schedule, as provided by the network:
