A single California restaurant is named to the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list

Saison, the San Francisco restaurant known for chef Joshua Skenes’ nightly changing tasting menus, claimed the No. 27 spot on the annual World’s 50 Best Restaurants list at a gathering in New York last night. It is the only California restaurant to be featured on the list this year.

Massimo Bottura’s Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy, was named the No. 1 restaurant in the world. It is the first restaurant in Italy to claim the title.

The list, which debuted in 2002, actually includes 100 restaurants, with the top 50 given special attention and praise. It draws from the opinions of more than 900 international gourmands from the Diners Club World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy. The academy’s participating chefs, restaurateurs and food critics vote for their “bests” based on dining experiences around the world.

Noma, René Redzepi’s restaurant in Copenhagen, (he’s had pop-ups in London, Tokyo and Sydney) that claimed the World’s Best title for four years, was named No. 5 after having been in the top three since 2009.

There are six U.S. restaurants on the list this year: Saison in San Francisco (No. 27); Eleven Madison Park in New York (No. 3); Alinea in Chicago (No. 15); Le Bernardin in New York (No. 24); Estela in New York (No. 44); and Blue Hill at Stone Barns in New York (No. 48).

The French Laundry in Yountville, Calif., a past top 50 winner, was dropped to number 85.
