Good Food Festival to showcase Will Allen, farm food, GMO discussion

Will Allen -- urban farmer, MacArthur “genius grant” winner and author of “The Good Food Revolution” -- is to join students at John Muir High School in Pasadena and other volunteers next month to build a hoop house for indoor growing and education at the school’s gardens.

The event is to kick off the second Good Food Festival and Conference, scheduled for Nov. 2-4. The weekend is set to include panel discussions at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art on issues such as jobs in the food industry, as well as genetically modified crops and Proposition 37, the ballot measure on labeling of GMO foods.

Allen is to join other speakers at LACMA, including Laura Avery, director of the Santa Monica Farmers Markets; chef and radio host Evan Kleiman; and Andrew Kimbrell of the Center for Food Safety.

The conference is scheduled to conclude with a party at the Annenberg Community Beach House, with food from 30 chefs and 30 farmers.

The weekend is put on by the nonprofit organization FamilyFarmed.org, with the Santa Monica Farmers Market. The Beach House party is $125, and the LACMA event is $45, but museum members get a $10 discount.
