Millikan 55, Rosary 53
The way Long Beach Millikan Coach Lorene Morgan figures it, playing in the Moore League - even as third fiddle behind Long Beach Poly and Long Beach Wilson -- gives her team a distinct advantage.

“If we can do what we need to against those teams,” Morgan said, “it will carry over to almost anybody.”

That was the case Saturday at the Chino Hills Ayala Extravaganza, where the Rams, ranked No. 17 by The Times, pulled out a 55-53 victory over No. 9 Fullerton Rosary.

Both teams learned Friday they were playing each other after the schedule was changed at the last minute, matching representatives from probably the Southland’s two toughest leagues. Millikan (14-6) is in third place in the seven-team Moore League, and Rosary (18-4) is in first in the four-team Serra League. Each league has three teams ranked in The Times’ Top 25.

Both teams were coming off emotional games, Millikan losing a six-point lead and falling to No. 5 Wilson, 59-51, and Rosary seizing control of the Serra with a 62-49 win over No. 18 Santa Margarita, the three-time defending league champion.

Cara Enright scored six of her 20 point in a 10-0 run at the end of the third quarter to give Rosary a 43-40 lead going into the fourth quarter against Millikan.

The Rams answered with the help of Cassady Moore, who had a pair of steals and scored seven of her 11 points - including a three-pointer that gave Millikan the lead for good at 47-45 - in an 11-2 run.

The Rams stretched the lead to 55-48 before Rosary rallied, but the Royals hurt themselves in the final minute, allowing 16 seconds to elapse before committing a foul to stop the clock with 21 seconds left.

Feeling it needed a victory Monday to secure a top-seeded position in the Southern Section playoffs, San Clemente girls’ basketball team turned in its best performance of the season with a victory over Fullerton Troy.

San Clemente (13-3), ranked fifth by The Times, snapped a 31-game winning streak by the third-ranked Warriors (17-1) dating to last season’s 65-63 double-overtime loss to the Tritons. San Clemente has five consecutive victories over Troy dating to a 1999 playoff win that ended Troy’s 27-game winning streak.

Lindsey Pluimer led San Clemente with 26 points, 11 rebounds and six blocked shots, but it was another Triton player who played a key role in the victory, according to Troy Coach Kevin Kiernan.

“Lauren Riley killed us,” said Kiernan, whose team won last season’s Division II state title and came into the game ranked sixth in the state, three spots ahead of San Clemente. Both were ranked No. 1 in their respective divisions in the section, San Clemente in I-A and Troy in II-AA.

Riley, a 6-foot-4 senior, scored 11 and had 10 rebounds, four assists and three blocks, doing almost all her damage in the final 4:35 of the third quarter when 6-3 Pluimer left the game in foul trouble with a 30-24 lead. The Tritons, behind Riley, held a 40-35 lead when Pluimer returned in the fourth to score 15 of her points. She scored six in an 8-0 run to open the fourth quarter.

San Clemente compensated for 24 turnovers by shooting 68.8% from the field on 22 of 32 shooting, and making 17 of 23 free throws.

“This gives us confidence going into a championship or semifinal type of game,” said San Clemente Coach Mary Mulligan. “If we had lost, we’d have had four losses, and Ventura would have zero and [Newhall] Hart would have one, so I think this solidifies us as the No. 1 team in the division.”
