Sophomore Scott Player from Ayala won the 100 butterfly in 54.89 and the 50 freestyle in 22.65 at the second annual Ayala Invitational swim meet. Player set a meet record in the 50 freestyle in the preliminaries on Friday with a time of 22.47. Senior Manuel Sanchez from Los Altos also had a double win with a time of 1:00.17 in the 100 breast and 1:51.84 in the 200 freestyle. In a close 200 individual medley race, A.J. Kotanjain from Los Altos set a meet record with 2:03.85 and was followed by freshman Adrian Chavez of South Hills with 2:04.14.

Webb sophomore Jack Wiese also won twice -- in the 200 freestyle at 1:53.53, and in the 500 freestyle at 5:08.54.La Salle’s Pat Driscoll swam a 2:22.54 in the 200 individual medley.

Junior Scott Davidson swam 4:57.73 in the 500m freestyle, setting a personal record by eight seconds, to lead visiting Los Alamitos (3-0 in league) in a close race over (no first name) Sullivan of Huntington Beach, who swam 4:58.62. David Mills swam 22.38 in the 50 freestyle for Los Alamitos and the Griffins also won the 200 freestyle medley in 1:30.95. Huntington Beach won the 200m medley relay in 1:45.30

MISSION LEAGUE

Sophomore Aaron Casey, who is unbeaten this season in the 500 freestyle and 100 backstroke, won both events again in 4:49.69 and 56.64 seconds, respectively, for Loyola (3-0, 2-0) in a Mission League meet at Loyola.Eugene Nam also was a double winner, in the 200 individual medley (2:05.00) and the 100 butterfly (58.71). He is unbeaten in the butterfly. Casey and Nam also each swam legs on the Cubs’ winning 200 medley and 400 free relay teams.

John Foster won the 200 freestyle in 1:43.85, the 500 freestyle in 4:43.67, and joined Steve Bruner, Mark Milovic and Kyle Casagrande to finish the 200 medley relay in 1:43.72 for host Villa Park (3-2). Milovic finished the 50 freestyle in 22.16 and the 100 freestyle in 49.13. Brea is 3-3.

Jessica Cruzat broke her own school record by winning the 500 freestyle in 4:59.04. Kruzat also finished the 100 butterfly in 1:00.47, and joined Lyndsay DePaul, Angela Samuels and Lindsey Bruner to finish the 200 freestyle relay in 1:43.82 for host Villa Park (5-0, 2-0), ranked No. 2 by the Times. DePaul and Bruner joined Aubrey Panis and Esther Cheng to finish the 200 medley relay in 1:58.81. Samuels finished the 200 freestyle in 2:00.20, De Paul timed at 2:08.26 in the 200 individual medley and at 53.98 in the 100 freestyle, and Panis finished the 100 backstroke in 1:03.46. Brea is 2-4.

Lenny Grim won the 100 freestyle in 53.07, finished third in the 50 freestyle in 23.90, and was part of the winning 200 medley relay and the winning 400 freestyle relay, and Justin Wellins won 100 backstroke in 58.78 and finished second in the 50 freestyle in 23.85 to lead visiting Canyon Country Canyon (3-1, 1-1).

Roxy Camuso won the 50 freestyle in 25.43 and the 100 backstroke in 1:01.58, and finished second in the 200 freestyle relay for Canyon Country Canyon (2-2, 0-2). Sepa won the 200 individual medley in 2:16.54 for host Burbank Burroughs.

Freshman Sara Sun won the 200 individual medley in 2:13.23 and the backstroke in 1:01.68 for Crescenta Valley (4-0, 2-0) in a Pacific League meet at Muir.

Sun, who met automatic Southern Section preliminary qualifying standards, would usually swim in the 50 and 500 freestyles, but competed in off events. Sophomore teammate Minah Kim won the 100 breaststroke (1:14.24).

Jereme Barnett-Woods won the 200 freestyle in 1:49.09 and the 100 backstroke in 57.77, and Wesley Li won the 50 freestyle in 22.24 and the 100 freestyle in 50.43 to lead No. 7 Irvine University (3-1). David Mock won the 100 butterfly in 55.75, and Tyler Walker won the 500 freestyle in 5:02.19 for University.

Irvine’s 400 free relay team, which needed a second-place finish to win the meet, took second with a time of 3:45.85 to secure the victory. Newport Harbor (0-2 in league) won the 400 free relay in 3:45.61.

Mission Viejo 86, San Clemente 84
Freshman Andrew Godbe won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:59.77 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.59 and Mission Viejo’s 400 freestyle relay team won the last event of the day to break a 79-79 tie and give the Diablos the victory in a South Coast League meet at San Clemente.

Sophomore Scott Sorge, junior Nick Divan and sophomores Greg Goodell and Daniel Owens clocked 3:14.87 in the decisive 400 free relay race.

The other key performances for Mission Viejo, the defending league and Southern Section Division I champion, came in the 500 freestyle. The Diablos (5-1, 2-0), ranked No. 2 in the Southland by The Times, trailed the third-ranked Tritons, 49-45, going into the race but scored 13 points in the event to forge a 58-52 advantage -- their largest of the meet -- with a sweep of the top three places by freshmen Chad La Tourette (4:50.44) and Brian Hopp (5:11.91) and sophomore Tucker Muse (5:14.29).

Junior Scott Spansail led San Clemente (2-0, 2-0) with victories in the 200 freestyle and the 100 backstroke. Divan was second in the 200 free for Mission Viejo.

Trabuco Hills 111, Capistrano Valley 59
Richard Hunter won the 200 IM and 100 backstrroke and Michael Kirkpatrick finished first in the 50 and 100 free to lead the Mustangs.

Capistrano Valley 87, Trabuco Hills 83
The Cougars won the decisive final event -- the 400 free relay -- to pull out the victory. Kelly Wilkings won the 100 back and 200 free and Erin Ketchum took the 200 IM and 500 free to lead Capistrano Valley.

Mission Viejo 94, San Clemente 76
Freshman Melinda Bolton, sophomore Danielle Rash and senior Corrie Nix finished 1-2-3 in the 100-yard backstroke for Mission Viejo in the ninth event of the day as the Diablos pulled away down the stretch to beat four-time defending South Coast League champion San Clemente at San Clemente.

Bolton won in 1:01.55, while Rash finished in 1:07.05 and Nix clocked 1:07.55 to help the Diablos (6-0, 2-0) secure the victory after trailing the Tritons by six points through six of the 11 events in the meet.

“You should have seen our seniors. They’ve been chasing San Clemente for years,” Mission Viejo Coach Kristine Palle said. “There were tears and hugs all around, or swimmers and coaches. The place was crazy. It was a good day for Mission Viejo swimming.”

Senior Nicolette Teo won the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.12 and teammate Anne Rodriguez, a sophomore, posted a personal season-best time of 1:09.44 as the Diablos finished 1-2 in that event, the second-to-last of the day. Teo also won the 200 individual medley in 2:05.52.

Mission Viejo, ranked No. 4 in the Southland by The Times, also had a 1-2 finish in the 100 freestyle, where sophomore Kristen Yoon won with a time of 55.29 seconds and freshman Lindsay Warkentin recorded a personal-best of 55.42.

The 4x100 freestyle relay was the difference for host Los Alamitos. The Griffins led 98-78 heading into the race and needed the win the final contest to secure the victory. Los Alamitos finished the race in 3:28.20 and the Barrons came in at 3:29.60.

Mitchell Andrejich won the 100 freestyle in 50.15 and Eugene Nam came in third in the 200 individual medley in 2:03.45 to lead visiting Loyola (2-0). The Cubs also won the 200 medley relay in 1:44.23, the 400 freestyle relay in 3:24.08 and the 200 freestyle relay in 1:32.73.
