ORANGE COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS
At Irvine Regional Park

Senior Brandon Bethke of Lake Forest El Toro successfully defended his title with a course-record 14:30 to win the Orange County Divsion I Cross-country Championships over the three-mile course at Irvine Regional Park.

Bethke won last year’s race in 14:58 after running 15:34 as a sophomore behind Michael Haddan of Irvine Woodbridge, who set a course record of 14:37 in 2002.

El Toro scored 80 points, just edging out Huntington Beach Marina, at 83 and Placentia Valencia, at 85, for the team title.

ORANGE COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS
At Irvine Regional Park

In the Girls’ Division I race Fountain Valley, led by junior Crystal Reed, who finished fourth in 17:56, won its fourth straight invitational with 64 points to remain undefeated this season.

Huntington Beach Edison was second with 120 points and Brea Olinda was third with 156 points.

Junior Whitney Blue of Newport Beach Neport Harbor was the individual winner in 17:07 with freshman Shelby Buckley of Fullerton Rosary in second at 17:09.

Ontario Christian had four of the top six runners, and all five scorers in the top 10. Ontario Christian was led by second-place Briana Yancy (23:59), third-place Morgan Marcos (24:38) and fifth-place Jacqueline Jauregui (25:22) on a 3.2 mile course in Murrieta. The winner was Kelly Johnson (23:48) of Arrowhead Christian, which had four runners in the top 14, but posted no score because it doesn’t have a fifth runner on the team.
