A young child strapped into a car seat escaped a drive-by shooting mostly uninjured Wednesday night in Mid-City, authorities said.

The child was in a parked car along with two men, one in his 30s the other in his 50s, in the 2000 block of South Corning Street at about 7:35 p.m. “when a vehicle drove up and opened fire on them,” said Los Angeles police Officer Wendy Reyes.

“There was a child in the car and the child was not injured,” she said, adding that she did not know the child’s age.

On Wednesday night, there were early reports that the child had been injured by glass fragments from the shooting. But Reyes said the child escaped generally unharmed.

The two men in the car, however, were struck by the gunfire and taken to a hospital. Reyes said one had already been released and the other is also expected to survive.

“The victims are not gang members, but it’s possible that the suspects were,” Reyes said. “Wrong place at the wrong time.”
