Metro bus, tow truck collide in downtown L.A.; drivers injured

A Metro bus and tow truck collided in downtown Los Angeles early Wednesday, seriously injuring both drivers and sending the truck careening into a convenience store.

The crash occurred about 5:10 a.m. at 5th Street and Broadway. TV news video showed the mangled front of the bus and the tow truck’s cab pancaked.

Both drivers had to be removed with the Jaws of Life, a Los Angeles Fire Department official said.

The bus driver, a 35-year-old woman, was critically injured and taken to a local hospital. There were no passengers on the bus at the time of the crash.

The tow truck driver was seriously injured and taken to a local hospital. A man working inside the 7-Eleven at the time of the crash suffered minor injuries and was being evaluated at the scene, officials said.

A building inspector was expected to check the integrity of the building where the truck crashed, officials said.
