San Diego officer wounded by gunman released from hospital
The San Diego police officer shot by a fleeing felon has been released from the hospital after emergency surgery, officials said Friday.
Officer Tim Bell, 29, a six-year veteran, was shot in the arm, leg and chest Thursday afternoon while chasing a felon wanted on a warrant for assault with a deadly weapon, said Capt. Terry McManus.
The man fired seven times as Bell followed him through a drainage tunnel in the City Heights neighborhood. Some of the rounds struck Bell’s protective vest, saving his life, McManus said.
Other officers arrested the suspected gunman, Ignacio Canela, 31, who is now in county jail awaiting arraignment on charges of possession of drugs, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and attempted murder.
Bell was treated at Scripps Mercy Hospital where he was released Friday into the care of his family, officials said. Acting Mayor Todd Gloria said doctors predict Bell will make a full recovery.
