Four small, early morning earthquakes shake South Bay
A series of small earthquakes shook the South Bay and Los Angeles Harbor on Friday morning, when temblors ranging from magnitude 2.2 to magnitude 3.0 struck off the coast before 5 a.m.
It started with a magnitude 2.2 earthquake centered about 7½ miles southwest of San Pedro at 3:55 a.m., followed by a magnitude 2.9 quake at 4:19 a.m. about seven miles off Ranchos Palos Verdes.
Six minutes later, a short distance away, the biggest one of the morning – magnitude 3.0 – rattled morning residents. The U.S. Geological Survey says 81 people reported feeling that quake, with one report coming from Newbury Park in Ventura County. The other responses were focused in the South Bay, the farthest coming from a person in Hermosa Beach. The quake was extremely shallow, according to the USGS.
At 4:47 a.m., a fourth quake struck about 10 miles off Ranchos Palos Verdes. The magnitude 2.7 was centered about five miles underground, according to a USGS summary of the event.
