Man shot by Santa Ana police dies

A man who was wounded in an officer-involved shooting in Santa Ana on March 15 has died, police said.

Jason Erling Hallstrom, 41, died late Saturday, said Santa Ana Police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.

Hallstrom was charged with a felony count of unlawfully taking a vehicle and a misdemeanor count of resisting a peace officer, according to court records. He was due in court Monday.

On March 15, police said they attempted to pull over the driver of a four-door beige Nissan Sentra as it was traveling northbound on the 5 Freeway.

The driver, identified as Travis Stuart Mock, 29, pulled off the freeway at North Grand Avenue and then sped north to East 15th Street. Police originally reported that Hallstrom was the driver.

Mock attempted to make an eastbound turn but crashed into a curb, coming to a halt in nearby shrubbery, Bertagna said.

Mock and Hallstrom exited the car, after which the officer-involved shooting occurred, authorities said. It is still unclear what led to the shooting.

Hallstrom was arrested near the car, and Mock attempted to flee but was arrested. Both were taken to Western Medical Center. Police initially said the two men were in serious but stable condition.

Last week, Mock pleaded not guilty to felony counts of evading a peace officer and reckless driving, the unlawful taking of a vehicle and possession of a controlled substance, among other charges, according to court records.

The incident is under investigation by the Orange County district attorney’s office, a standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.
