Readers React: Praise for Israel’s justice system

Even judged by the standards of Western civilized nations, the fact that an Israeli court sentenced a former prime minister to six years in prison for taking bribes in a real estate scam is impressive. Coupled with the fact that a former Israeli president is currently serving time for rape, it becomes clear that Israel’s commitment to equal justice for all is remarkable. (“Ex-Israeli leader Ehud Olmert sentenced to 6 years for bribe-taking,” May 13)

Furthermore, compared to neighbors Syria, Egypt and Libya, where justice of any kind has fallen victim to vicious civil war, and to Brunei, which recently made headlines for instituting Islamic sharia law, Israel’s commitment to civilized behavior and fairness is even more impressive.
