Letters: Law and marriage can’t be divorced

Re “GOP rivals make pitch,” March 16

Assemblyman Tim Donnelly (R-Twin Peaks) says religious institutions, not government, should “regulate” marriages.

As someone who was married and divorced in California, I would remind Donnelly that, in addition to any spiritual value bestowed upon it, marriage is a legally binding contract. So unless religious institutions can also “regulate” divorce, it’s simply not possible to decouple law from marriage.

Including — to Donnelly’s apparent chagrin — the legal right to same-sex marriage.
