Letters: What the L.A. River could be
Re “L.A. River’s new flow chart,” Sept. 14
As a longtime resident of Atwater Village, near the Los Angeles River, I am pleased with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for endorsing a restoration plan, albeit a modest one.
I understand its mission is to protect lives. But times have changed, and so should the corps.
We know that more green spaces and more access to recreational areas decrease crime and promote a sense of commonality and civility. In this case, increasing the viability of the Los Angeles River falls very well within the corps’ directive to protect and serve the citizens.
The restoration would also benefit laborers who will rebuild this infrastructure and the merchants and businesses who would profit from this. The corps should expand its vision for the river.
