Readers React: Rejecting LGBT rights: What’s the matter with Houston?

To the editor: Houston, you have a problem. (“Houston voters reject LGBT equal rights measure,” Nov. 3)

I am absolutely appalled and disgusted that voters in Texas’ most populous city overwhelmingly defeated an ordinance giving basic rights to gay and transgender people. As a straight, white, Jewish female, I don’t know how they can do this.

In the 21st century, this kind of sanctimony has no place at all in the U.S. And don’t even begin to mention God or the Bible.

I’m sure some of the people in Houston who opposed the ordinance have family members who, not too long ago, faced the discrimination and hatred they are now foisting on others. Where is their respect for human dignity?

Thank everything I live in a city where everyone is treated with respect. If I ever had planned on going to Houston, I certainly wouldn’t now.
