Readers React: Regulate drones? What about those other, dangerous creatures of the sky?

To the editor: My young daughter recently told me of an alarming event. Way back in 1903, she says, a pair of reckless experimenters named Orville and Wilbur Wright invented a diabolical flying machine that can hold a human captive in its cage of wires and wooden struts, transporting the hapless victim to who knows where. (“Drone regulations should be considered for use now and in the future,” editorial, Dec. 13)

That notwithstanding, I believe the uproar about drones misses the mark completely.

Birds, those unregulated, uncontrolled denizens of the skies, have been peering through our bedroom windows, flying not just near, but actually into airport terminals. And talk about noise: Sometimes the crows cawing and pecking on my roof actually drown out the sound of the jumbo jets flying into LAX.

These winged rats and wolves show no respect for human laws or customs. They act like they own the place. For eons they have been flying hither and thither over the planet, crossing great oceans in their filthy quest to create more of their own feather-shedding, flea-bitten kind.

I call for immediate registration of all birds, before these sneaky, beady-eyed airborne predators wreak even more havoc.

To the editor: You say “Banning drones outright shouldn’t be an option.”

But you omit perhaps the most worrisome use of drones: as delivery vehicles for explosives by terrorists or other criminals. Just an ounce of imagination is required to conjure up the dire possibilities.

Use of drones by bad actors may ultimately outweigh the benefits of use by law-abiding people. Banning them outright should definitely be an option.

To the editor: So, let me get this straight: The Federal Aviation Administration is able to require that all drones be registered in a national database, and they’re able to collect $5 per registration in the process. But we can’t do this for firearms?
