To the editor: We are sorry to see The Times editorial mischaracterize Frances Fox Piven’s lead essay in The Nation’s inauguration issue (“The People vs. The President”).

At this critical time, Piven offers a road map for resistance under President Trump, counseling not “wholesale panic” but widespread protest—an act as American as apple pie. Piven doesn’t call for indiscriminate opposition, but rather deliberate action at state, city, and local levels aimed at “halting or foiling initiatives that threaten harm.”

What interests Piven and The Nation is how we move forward through strategic organizing, movement building, and collective action so vital in this political moment.
