Laguna Beach boys’ tennis rolls

Coming off a dominating performance at last week’s Orange Coast League tournament, the Laguna Beach High boys’ tennis team continued its strong play Wednesday in the opening round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs.

The division’s No. 2 seed advanced to Friday’s second round by defeating visiting Cerritos Valley Christian, 16-2. The Breakers swept in singles and their No. 3 doubles team of Mason Lebby and Taylor Sokolovich, defeated Valley Christian’s No. 1 team in a tiebreaker after being down, 4-1.

The Crusaders were the No. 2 team from the Olympic League.

Sweeping in singles were No. 1 Ryan Gee (7-6, 6-2, 6-1), No. 2 Tristan Krogius (6-0, 6-0, 6-1), and No. 3 Blake Hawkins (6-0, 6-0, 6-2). In doubles, the No. 2 team of Ethan Gee/Hayden Seitz swept by 6-0 scores, and No. 1 Nick Besso/Sterling Brown (6-4, 4-6, 6-1) and Lebby/Sokolovich (7-6 tiebreaker, 3-6, 6-1) won two of three sets.

“The boys were excited to play and stayed focus throughout the match, which led to some dominant performances for all three rounds,” Laguna Coach Don Davis said.

Laguna, now 17-3, advances to a second-round home date at 3 p.m. Friday against Golden West League champion Westminster. The Lions eliminated Los Angeles Milken Community (Liberty League No. 2) Wednesday, 14-4.

At the Orange Coast League finals May 5 on the Laguna courts, the Breakers made up both the singles and doubles finals matches.

In the singles title match, Ryan Gee (34-6 record) defeated teammate Tristan Krogius (28-8), 6-2, 6-1. In the doubles title match, the team of Ethan Gee (44-2) and Hayden Seitz (44-2) turned back teammates Mason Lebby (39-10) and Taylor Sokolovich (39-10), 6-1, 6-0.

Ryan Gee won the league singles title for the third consecutive year, and Ethan Gee won his second doubles crown which he first won two years ago as a freshman

Charles Keller (29-8) of Laguna captured third place in the singles tournament, and the team of Jake Pietig (32-12) and Blake Hawkins (32-12) took third in the doubles tournament.

“We swept in both singles and doubles, and Ryan (Gee) won a third straight singles title, which is quite remarkable,” Davis said.

Boys’ Volleyball

The Breakers started their 43rd postseason playoff appearance Tuesday when they took on Glendale Hoover at Dugger Gym in the first-round of the CIF-SS Division 2 playoffs. They swept the Tornadoes (Pacific Coast League No. 4), 25-14, 25-19, 25-16.

Senior middle blocker Tyler Alter and sophomore outside hitter Josh McManus both had 11 kills, and junior outside hitter Pete Obradovich and sophomore opposite Sam Burgi eight kills each for the Breakers, the No. 2-seed behind defending division champion Oak Park in the tournament.

Junior libero Cole Paxson had a team-high 20 digs and senior setter Isaac Wulff 38 assists and eight digs.

The program won for the 97th time in CIF competition and improved its all-time postseason record to 97-36.

The Breakers, champions of the Orange Coast League improved to 18-8 overall and advanced to host El Toro (Sea View League No. 2) Thursday. The score wasn’t available at press time.

The El Toro-Laguna winner advances to the division quarterfinals Saturday and will take on the winner of the Thursday second-round game between South Pasadena (Rio Hondo League No. 2) and Simi Valley (Coastal Canyon League No. 3).

The division semifinals are Wednesday.

Boys’ Golf

Three Breakers, senior Max Brown, sophomore Kyle Sharp and sophomore Dante Fornaro, advanced from the Orange Coast League to Monday’s at the CIF Southern Division Individual Regional Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach.

Brown was Laguna’s top finisher with a score of 80 which tied him for the 59th spot. Sharp shot 81 and tied for 69th-place. Breakers Coach Scott Finn said Fornaro had to withdraw from the competition after 13 holes due to neck/back pain.

The cut to advance to the next round of the Southern Individuals was 74. The tournament included 112 players, 20 of whom advanced.

“I was really proud of our guys and how they played,” Finn said.

The Breakers, champions of the Orange Coast League, will be the league representative in the CIF-SS Southern Team Divisional playoffs Monday (8 a.m.) at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley.

“All of our guys are playing well so I look forward to seeing how we compete against the top schools,” Finn said.

Swimming

The Breakers will compete Friday at the CIF-SS Division 2 Swimming Championships at Riverside City College. The division finals are Saturday.

The diving portion of the championships was held Monday at RCC, and included the Breakers’ Liv Mitchell. The sophomore won the Division 2 title with a standout performance that netted 502 points. Here closest competitor was Crescenta Valley freshman Katelynn Shaheen who was second with 488.35 points.

The Breakers dominated the Orange Coast League finals May 4 at Costa Mesa, winning four league titles (boys’ and girls’ varsity, junior varsity. Below are key results from the finals meet:

Varsity girls new CIF consideration times: Keira Dailey (100 backstroke, 1:02.93, and 100 free, 55.92); Claire Sonne (100 free, 55.33, and 50 free, 25.49); Bella Baldridge (100 free, 56.66); Harper Dix (100 butterfly, 59.21); Natalie Selin (100 butterfly, 1:03.44).

“The team had an outstanding performance at league finals winning across all four levels,” Laguna co-Coach Beth Weber said. “We have a solid team of eight girls and seven boys going to CIF along with our diver, Liv Mitchell. CIF competition is always so exciting because anything can happen.

“This group has a lot of heart and they are motivated to race hard and compete with the best, so I’m confident they will place well at CIF finals on Saturday.”

Track and Field

The Laguna girls’ varsity team won an Orange Coast League championship at the league finals meet May 5 at Laguna. The Laguna boys’ varsity team was edged out for the league title by Godinez.

Several Breakers won individual and relay titles and turned in outstanding performances at the finals meet. Individually on the girls’ side, Coco Putnam won her fourth consecutive league title in both the 400-meter dash and 300 hurdles, Jackie Cenan won the shotput for the third year in a row, and Pearl Shoemaker repeated as the 3,200-meter champion. For the boys, Charles Warner won his third consecutive 110 meters title and his second-straight high jumps title, and Brody Seebass won two events (300 hurdles, triple jump).

Laguna girls’ league champions: Coco Putnam (400-meter dash, 57.46; 300 meter hurdles, 44.90); Christine Johnson (100 hurdles, 18.15); Regan Caraher (800-meter run (2:24.95); Pearl Shoemaker (3,200-meter run, 11:59.62); Lauren Stuss (long jump, 15-feet-1); Blake Turner (triple jump, 32-00); Jackie Cenan (shotput, 37-08.5); 4x100 relay team (51.17); 4x400 relay team (4:17.35).

Laguna boys’ league champions: Charles Warner (110-meter hurdles, 16.17; high jump, 5-08); Brody Seebass (300-meter hurdles, 41.76; triple jump, 40-03.5).

The Breakers will compete Saturday at the CIF-SS Division 4 prelims at Carpinteria High.

Girls’ Sand Volleyball

The Breakers opened postseason play in the Interscholastic Beach Volleyball League tournament Monday in Huntington Beach, and overcame windy conditions to sweep Santa Monica Pacifica Christian, 3-0.

Monday’s scores for the Breakers: Team 1 Katelyn Carballo and Cammie Dorn won, 21-8, 21-11; Team 2 Katie Gavin and Lexi McKeown won, 21-7, 21-9; Team 3 Lauren LaMontagne and Sage Patchell won, 21-12, 21-9.

South Coast Division champion Laguna improved to 10-1. Pacifica Christian (Westside Division No. 3) fell to 6-5.

The win put the Breakers in a second-round match Thursday against Redondo Union. The score wasn’t available at press time.
