Florida State’s Jameis Winston Twitter promotion gets a bit salty
Florida State, bless its Sunshine State heart, is trying to find creative ways to promote an upcoming season in which the Seminoles will be heavily favored to repeat as national champions.
It isn’t easy, though, when your Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback has become a social media punch line.
Florida State on Sunday launched a Twitter campaign inviting fans to ask questions of star quarterback Jameis Winston.
Needless to say, the hashtag promotion #AskJameis did not go well. Twitter crashers used the time to poke fun at a quarterback who has had off-field problems that included sexual assault charges and accusations of stealing crab legs from a local supermarket.
Some of the responses were harmless: “Do you play other sports besides football and baseball?”
And then there were these:
--”Crab or Lobster. What’s the best steal of a deal?”
--”How many stiff arms did he throw to get out of the store without paying for the crablegs?
--”I heard your favorite play was the crab and go, will we being seeing more of that this season?”
--”Jameis, you were 13-0 on the football field and 2-0 in the court system. What was your overall record?” (Note: Florida State was actually 14-0 last year.)
Maybe Florida State should forget future #hashtags for Winston and consider, perhaps, a silent auction.
