Baseball: Mike Curran announces his retirement at Esperanza after 36 years

High school baseball in Southern California will be without one of its finest coaches.

Mike Curran of Esperanza announced on Tuesday that he is retiring after being the head coach since 1981.

“I’m done,” he said. “I’m going to turn the page.”

Curran made his announcement after Esperanza lost to Murrieta Mesa, 1-0, in a second-round Division 1 playoff game.

Esperanza won three Southern Section championships under Curran and made the final seven times. His 1986 team was considered No. 1 in the nation. When including a coaching stint at St. Paul, he finished with 751 wins.

“I’ve had a great career,” he said. “It’s time to do something else. I have no regrets.”
