Boys’ basketball: David Arellano comes through for Downey

There was lots of excitement on Wednesday night at Sonora High in the North Orange County tournament. First there was a 41-point performance by junior guard Josh Rodriguez in Sonora’s 94-38 victory over Riverside King.

But the most dramatic game involved Downey and Brea Olinda. Sophomore Zac Jervis tied the game at 53-53 with seven seconds left by making a three-pointer.

Then came David Arellano calmly drilling a three-pointer with one second left to give Downey (6-1) a 56-53 victory.

Damien remained unbeaten with a 75-58 win over Troy. Jeremy Hemsley scored 22 points and Isaiah McCullough had 17. Orange Lutheran defeated Gahr, 90-80. Joel Debus had 23 points.

In the Inland Valley Classic, Etiwanda defeated Eastlake Roosevelt, 66-52. Jordan McLaughlin scored 29 points and Kameron Edwards had 17 points and 12 rebounds. Compton defeated Redlands East Valley, 78-54. Isaiah Bailey had 30 points.

Rancho Cucamonga defeated Canyon Springs, 85-45. Daylan Lawrence had 16 points. Thursday’s quarterifinal schedule: At Rancho Cumamonga, Compton vs. Los Osos, 6 p.m.; Rancho Cucamonga vs. Chino Hills, 7:30 p.m.; At Miller, Corona Santiago vs. Etiwanda, 7:30 p.m.; At Colony, Upland vs. Colony, 7:30 p.m.

Corona Centennial defeated Christian Brothers, 88-49. Khalil Ahmad had 18 points, Deontae North had 17 points and Sedrick Barefield contributed 16 points and nine assists.

Kendall Small had 31 points to help Mayfiair (5-1) defeated Saddleback Valley Christian, 74-60.

In Florida, St. John Bosco was beaten by Providence, 70-65. Freshman Billy Preston scored 21 points and had 12 rebounds. Daniel Hamilton had 15 points.

In Las Vegas, Stanley Johnson scored 42 points in Mater Dei’s 84-45 win over Foothill Christian. MJ Cage contributed 16 points, 18 rebounds and four blocks.

In the Mission Prep tournament, Cameron Walker scored 34 points in Righetti’s 80-76 overtime win over Sylmar. Crespi rallied for a 70-67 win over Mission Prep. DJ Ursery scored 28 points and Max Heidegger had 26. Bishop Montgomery defeated Maranatha, 77-40. Atascadero defeated Campbell Hall, 69-62. Robbie Berwick scored 26 points. Aaron Holiday had 25 for Campbell Hall. Kahlil Simplis had 19 in his return from an ankle injury.

In the La Canada tournament, St. Francis defeated South Hills, 73-53. Kyle Leufroy scored 18 points.

In Clovis, Sun Valley Poly was beaten by Bullard, 77-68. Cesar Reyes scored 34 points, making nine three-pointers.

In the Marmonte League, Matt Hauser scored 23 points to help Thousand Oaks defeat Moorpark, 54-45. Westlake defeated Newbury Park, 46-26. Isaiah Brooks led the Warriors with 14 points.

In the Marine League, Narbonne defeated Carson, 51-37. Reverend Maduakor scored 24 points. Eban Jackson added 10 points and eight rebounds.
