Boys’ basketball: Sierra Canyon stuns Bishop O’Dowd

It might be time to start paying attention to unbeaten Chatsworth Sierra Canyon, a team relying on freshmen in key areas. On Friday night, Sierra Canyon stunned state power Oakland Bishop O’Dowd, 70-65, to advance to the semifinals of the Under Armour tournament in San Diego.

Last week, Bishop O’Dowd took No. 1 Santa Ana Mater Dei to overtime before losing in Las Vegas. Freshman Cody Riley scored 24 points and sophomore Deveral Ramsey had 22 points. Sierra Canyon (12-0) will face Loyola in a battle of unbeatens in the semifinals.

Loyola (10-0) advanced to the semifinals with a 76-61 victory over New Jersey Patrick on Friday. Max Hazzard scored 32 points, making seven three-pointers. Thomas Welsh had 12 points and 15 rebounds and Parker Jackson-Cartwright added 14 points.

Chino Hills defeated Wesleyan Christian, 64-44. Lonzo Ball had 23 points. Corona Centennial defeated Westtown, 71-53. Rancho Cucamonga defeated Anchorage Christian, 92-90. Victor Joseph had 27 points. Windward defeated Fairfax, 68-58.

In Rancho Mirage, No. 2 Etiwanda was beaten by Captial Christian, 48-42. Elijah Stewart scored 37 points for Westchester in a 66-58 win over St. Edward. Brentwood defeated Sutter, 80-48. Tra Holder scored 31 points. Calabasas defeated Orangewood Academy, 62-36. Larry Bush had 11 points. De La Salle defeated Harvard-Westlake, 61-52.

No. 1 Mater Dei stayed unbeaten with an 81-41 win over Saddleback Valley Christian. Stanley Johnson had 32 points. Mater Dei will play Anaheim Canyon in the semifinals of the Orange Holiday Classic.

Dwan Hurt earned his 500th career coaching victory in Gardena Serra’s 71-57 win over Freedom.

Thousand Oaks defeated Perris, 66-42. Andrew Lachina had 19 points and Matt Hauser 18 points. Then the Lancers (12-2) were beaten in overtime by Riverside North, 67-61. Hauser had 24 points. Village Christian stayed unbeaten with a 69-53 win over Glendale in the Hart tournament. Marsalis Johnson had 27 points. Bennie Boatwright had 24 points.

Bishop Montgomery defeated Long Beach Jordan, 87-44. McClymonds defeated Royal, 82-77, in the Clovis Elks tournament. Nick Brandon had 23 points.

In the Chaminade tournament, Valencia defeated Birmingham, 80-65. Christian Mendoza had 20 points for Birmingham. Oaks Christian defeated Verdugo Hills, 70-27. KJ Smith had 13 points. Oaks Christian will play Chaminade in the semifinals. Valencia will face Eastside Catholic in the other semifinal.

In the Westlake tournament, Santa Monica defeated the Warriors, 53-50. Jeremiah Gray led Westlake with 13 points.

In Santa Maria, Lawndale defeated Encinal, 75-66. TJ Johnson had 18 points. El Camino Real defeated Oakland, 69-40. Evan Wardlow had 14 points. Orange Lutheran defeated Morningside, 55-44.

La Canada defeated Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, 52-51. Dan Jun had 15 points for La Canada. Eliijah Ellen led Notre Dame with 13 points.

Damien defeated Bishop Amat, 66-44. Jeremy Hemsley had 27 points.

Campbell Hall lost to Fresno Central, 76-75, at the buzzer. Khalil Simplis had 21 points, Aaron Holiday 17 and Jordan Cohen 16.

Righetti defeated Grant, 55-38. Cameron Walker had 21 points. Canyon Country Canyon defeated Oxnard, 57-55. Mark Bell and Dean Hendrix-Davis each had 15 points. Canyon is 12-1.

Buckley (11-0) defeated Shadow Hills, 86-35. Chase Holliday had 17 points. Palmdale Highland defeated South Bakersfield, 68-49, to advance to semifinals of the Hart tournament. Devin Burleson finished with 14 points and 16 rebounds. Viewpoint defeated Xavier College Prep, 62-53. Tim Howell had 22 points.

Crespi defeated Miramonte, 77-63. DJ Ursery had 28 points and 10 rebounds.
