Cross country: Palisades’ Marissa Williams, Venice’s Paul Luevano lead qualifiers

Marissa Williams of Palisades and Paul Luevano of Venice came away with the top qualifying times for girls and boys in Division I at the City Section cross country prelims on Thursday at Pierce College,
Williams was almost two minutes faster than her nearest competitor in winning her heat in 17:16.69. Palisades is also the clear favorite to win the girls’ team title.
Luevano ran 15:15.53 to outkick Marshall’s Michael Merchan, who ran 15:24.43 in a boys’ Division I heat.
Also winning boys’ heats were sophomore Ethan Estrada of El Camino Real in 15:49.55 and Jody Ceja of Birmingham in 15:44.32.
El Camino Real led its heat to qualify for the team championship at the City final on Nov. 22 at Pierce.
