Football: St. John Bosco wins Huntington Beach tournament

The summer passing tournament season is pretty much over, and it’s no surprise that St. John Bosco left a lasting impression even though the Braves graduated some key players off their 16-0 team last season.
St. John Bosco ended its summer season on Saturday by going unbeaten in winning the Huntington Beach tournament championship, defeating Bishop Amat in the final.
Quarterback Josh Rosen threw well all day, and backup Quentin Davis came through with a decisive touchdown pass in a close morning game against Crespi.
St. John Bosco has lots of good receivers. Kaylin Franklin had the big TD catch against Crespi. Running back Sean McGrew gave a hint what he may be doing in the fall, going deep on several patterns to score touchdowns.
St. John Bosco will take about a week off, then return to practice and prepare for an Aug. 22 opener in Hawaii against Honolulu St. Louis.
Perhaps the most important development for the Braves this summer was the decision of lineman Matt Katnik to play football after considering dropping the sport to focus on shot put and discus in track. His return will help some young linemen get better.
Among other teams in the tournament, Tesoro should off a promising quarterback in junior Devon Modster.
Crespi went 4-1 in the tournament behind quarterback Wes Massett, losing only to St. John Bosco.
