Soccer: Palisades pulls out win over Sylmar in shootout

After regulation ended in a 1-1 tie and after two 10-minute overtime periods and two five-minute sudden death periods, Palisades and Sylmar went into a shootout to decide their City Section Division I semifinal playoff match.

It end when Juan Pablo Marquez made his penalty kicks to give Palisades a 6-5 win in the shootout and advance to Saturday’s championship game against Granada Hills at 7:30 p.m. at Valley College.

In Division II, Joel Martinez scored the only goal to give South East a 1-0 win over Reseda. South East will face Fremont, a 3-0 win over Fairfax, at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

In Division III, Mario Campaz scored two goals in Arleta’s 2-0 win over Sotomayor. Canoga Park defeated Belmont, 7-0. Ezequiel Quijeda and Rafael Sandoval each scored two goals and had two assists. The championship game will be Friday at 7 p.m. at Valley College.

In Division I girls, El Camino Real advanced to the 5 p.m. championship game against Taft on Saturday with a 3-0 win over Bell.

In Division II, Fremont defeated Grant, 2-1, and South East defeated Bravo, 4-0.

In Division III, Verdugo Hills defeated LACES, 1-0.
