Two meeets and two career-bests for Matt Katnik, the senior shot putter at Bellflower St. John Bosco who is rapidly approaching the 70-foot mark.
On Wednesday in a meet involving three teams at Warren High, Katnik recorded a mark of 68 feet, 9 inches. That broke his school record he set last week when he had a mark of 66-8 1/2 at Santa Margarita.
Katnik, who signed with USC for track and field, spent all fall playing football.
“I didn’t spend a lot of time during football season training,” he said. “I’m a lot stronger. Today was a weird thing. It wasn’t a very competitive meet. I was just real relaxed.”
Asked about his record mark, Katnik said, “I was shocked. It kind of felt effortless to some extent. I was moving fast in the ring. If I keep it up, 70 feet is definitely within reach.”
His next meet will be Saturday at Esperanza High.
