Angels’ Ervin Santana feels good after solid outing

Share

Ervin Santana lounged back in the padded backseat of a golf cart and munched an apple.

Comfortable place, comfortable outing.

“My arm feels good,” Santana said. “I’m good.”

Five days after being struck on the right shoulder by a line drive, Santana threw four scoreless innings Monday against a Colorado Rockies lineup that included Carlos Gonzalez, Troy Tulowitzki and Todd Helton. He struck out four and gave up two hits and one walk.

“That I feel good, that was the best thing ever,” Santana said of the outing.

Forced to leave Wednesday’s game against the Chicago White Sox because of a bruise after the second-inning liner, Santana said the pain immediately became “better and better” and has vanished.

So he spent Monday’s 61-pitch, 39-strike outing “working on location, working hard to throw strikes.” And despite a breeze and temperatures in the 50s, Santana said “my location was tremendous.”

Albert Pujols wants swings

An Angels bus filled mostly with non-regulars trekked to Phoenix to play on a wet field in a rain-shortened weekend game.

Albert Pujols joined them.

“It’s his schedule, he’s on his rotation,” Manager Mike Scioscia said.

And Pujols was in the lineup again Monday in Scottsdale.

“I just like to play, to get my at-bats,” Pujols said.

Neither Pujols nor Scioscia identified a specific number of at-bats the three-time National League most valuable player is hoping to have this spring.

“He has a great feel for what he needs to do,” Scioscia said. “If there’s a day he wants to play, he’ll be in there. When a guy has a track record … everyone has different needs in spring training. Some just need 25 at-bats. Some want 60 to 70. It’s just a preference.”

Pujols has three home runs and nine runs batted in, and is batting .423 (11 for 26). His fifth-inning strikeout Monday was his first this spring.

“I’m getting there,” Pujols said. “I’ll be ready for opening day, I’m sure.”

Twitter exchange

Angels pitcher C.J. Wilson downplayed posting former Texas Rangers teammate Mike Napoli’s phone number on his Twitter account over the weekend as a “joke” and “prank.”

“It’s spring training,” Wilson said. “It’s not a story. … It’s not a big deal.”

With more than 110,000 followers, Wilson’s @str8edgeracer account tweeted a happy St. Patrick’s Day wish to Napoli and asked the former Angels catcher to call Wilson at a number that was actually Napoli’s.

Napoli told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, “You don’t do that. I’m not taking it as a prank.”

Consider the American League West rivalry livened up. The teams play a home-and-home spring series Saturday and Sunday. (The Rangers reported that Yu Darvish will not pitch against the Angels on Sunday as scheduled, and will throw in an intrasquad game that day.)

Wilson said he had not heard from Napoli.

“I’ve changed my number. I’m sure he’s changed his,” Wilson said.

Wilson deleted the phone number tweet by Sunday, with @str8edgeracer posting “ … I’m even with Mike for saying he can’t wait to hit homers off me.”

Kendrys Morales goes hitless

Designated hitter Kendrys Morales, aiming to make his major league spring debut Tuesday, was 0 for 3 with a strikeout in a triple-A game.

Morales said he anticipated four to six at-bats but stopped playing as a precaution when he felt soreness on his right shin, which is protected by a guard.

“I’m fine and will hit again [Tuesday],” Morales said. “I’m excited to hit again. I’m feeling more comfortable.”

Outfielder and top prospect Mike Trout was two for three in a double-A game, contributing a double and triple.

Jeremy Moore is dealing with hip problem

Hip surgery is an option for outfield prospect Jeremy Moore, Scioscia said.

“He’s struggling with some things now,” Scioscia said.

The speedy Moore, 24, told mlb.com he’s exploring surgery to treat a bone spur and other hip discomfort.

Moore said the procedure would sideline him three to five months.
