New York Yankees starter CC Sabathia exited Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Indians because of pain in the right knee.

Sabathia struck out Yan Gomes in the third inning. After the pitch, Sabathia stepped off the mound and was visited by trainer Steve Donohue and Manager Joe Girardi, then left the game.

Sabathia gave up two runs and four hits in 2 2/3 innings. He struggled with command, throwing only 30 of 55 pitches for strikes.

The Yankees said Sabathia was taken for an MRI exam.

Rafael Betancourt is designated for assignment by Rockies

Right-hander Rafael Betancourt, 40, was designated for assignment by the Colorado Rockies.

Betancourt was 2-4 with one save and a 6.18 earned-run average in 45 appearances this season. He joined the Rockies in a trade with Cleveland in 2009 and helped the team reach the playoffs that season.

He had 58 saves with the Rockies, fifth in franchise history.

Andy Pettitte’s uniform number is retired by Yankees

Left-hander Andy Pettitte, a five-time World Series champion and three-time All-Star who pitched 15 seasons with the New York Yankees, although not consecutively, had his uniform No. 46 retired in a pregame ceremony.

A plaque recognizing his career was put at Yankee Stadium’s Monument Park.

Pettitte, 43, had a 219-127 record with a 3.94 ERA in 447 games for the Yankees. He holds the franchise strikeout record with 2,020 and is No. 3 in victories behind Whitey Ford and Red Ruffing. Pettitte was 256-153 with a 3.85 ERA overall.

Spectator at Cubs game is hit by batted ball

The Chicago Cubs said a female spectator hit by a line drive foul ball Sunday was conscious and taken to a hospital.

The woman was carried off on a stretcher at Wrigley Field. She was struck by a foul from Cubs rookie Kyle Schwarber in the first inning. She was sitting just past the camera well on the first base side.

The game between the Cubs and Atlanta Braves was briefly stopped as spectators and ushers waved for medics.
