Brad Ausmus to return as Tigers manager

Brad Ausmus is returning next season as manager of the Detroit Tigers, General Manager Al Avila said Saturday.

Avila replaced Dave Dombrowski in early August and announced he would be doing a complete review of the organization.

When reports said that Ausmus would be fired at the end of the season, Avila issued a statement saying the review was still ongoing and decisions would be made before the end of the season.

“For the past two months, we’ve been evaluating every level of our baseball operations, and on Friday, I met with Brad and told him I wanted him to continue as manager of the Detroit Tigers,” Avila said. “He and I are on the same page as to the future of this organization.”

Ausmus won Detroit’s fourth consecutive American League Central title as a rookie manager in 2014.

His entire staff also will be retained.

“I’m happy to be back,” Ausmus said. “I’m disappointed in what has happened, but we’ve got a core group back and I think there’s a chance for a quick turnaround.”

Carlos Martinez is shut down by Cardinals

Pitcher Carlos Martinez has been shut down for the rest of the season and the postseason by the St. Louis Cardinals because of a shoulder strain.

The 14-game winner lasted only seven pitches Friday night against the Milwaukee Brewers.

John Mozeliak, the team’s general manager, said Tyler Lyons probably will pitch in place of Martinez against Pittsburgh on Wednesday.

Mets’ Juan Uribe aggravates injury

Infielder Juan Uribe of the New York Mets aggravated an injury to a chest cartilage and Manager Terry Collins said that the initial medical reports aren’t encouraging about how long the injury will take to heal.

Uribe left the Mets’ game against the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night after swinging at a pitch in the eighth inning.

Uribe is batting .219 with six home runs in 44 games since the Mets acquired him from the Atlanta Braves as part of a midseason makeover.
