Padres trade Jedd Gyorko to Cardinals for Jon Jay

The St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday acquired infielder Jedd Gyorko and cash from the San Diego Padres for outfielder Jon Jay.

The 27-year-old Gyorko hit .247 with 16 home runs and 57 runs batted in last season, spending time at second base, shortstop and first base. He has a .236 average in three big league seasons with 49 home runs and 171 RBIs.

Under a deal Gyorko signed in April 2014, he is guaranteed $4 million next season, $6 million in 2017, $9 million in 2018 and $13 million in 2019. The contract includes a $13-million club option for 2020 with a $1-million buyout.

Jay, 30, helped the Cardinals win the 2011 World Series title but hit .210 last season, his lowest average in six big league seasons and down from .303 in 2014. He has a .287 career average.

Jay has a $6,225,000 salary next season, then can become a free agent.

Tigers complete deal with Mark Lowe

The Detroit Tigers completed a two-year contract with reliever Mark Lowe, adding a setup man for new closer Francisco Rodriguez.

A 32-year-old right-hander, Lowe was 1-3 with a 1.96 earned-run average for Seattle and Toronto last season, striking out 61 batters in 55 innings. He did not give up a run in 49 of 57 appearances.

Lowe is 9-24 with a 3.80 ERA and six saves in 10 big league seasons, also pitching for the Seattle Mariners (2006-10), Texas (2010-12), the Angels (2013) and Cleveland (2014).

Rockies agree to deals with Jason Motte, Chad Qualls

The Colorado Rockies agreed to two-year contracts with relievers Jason Motte and Chad Qualls $6 million.

Motte, 33, will get $5 million per year. He appeared in 57 games with the Chicago Cubs last season, his seventh in the major leagues, and had six saves. He led the National League with 42 saves while with the Cardinals in 2012. Motte missed 2013 after elbow ligament-replacement surgery.

Qualls, 37, was 3-5 with a 4.38 ERA with Houston last season. He has 74 saves over 12 big league seasons that has included stints with Arizona, Houston, Tampa Bay, San Diego, Philadelphia, New York Yankees, Pittsburgh and Miami.

He gets a $1 million signing bonus and salaries of $1.75 million this year and $3.25 million in 2017.

Mets’ Wilmer Flores breaks an ankle

New York Mets infielder Wilmer Flores broke his left ankle last month when he was hit by a pitch playing winter ball in Venezuela.

John Ricco, Mets assistant general manager, said that Flores does not need surgery and is expected to be ready for spring training.

Flores was injured in his season debut with the Bravos de Margarita in his home country. He took several days off then returned to the lineup for three games before being shut down.

Flores hit .263 with 16 home runs and 59 RBIs in his first full season in the majors.
