First baseman Brandon Belt and the San Francisco Giants agreed Saturday to a $72.8-million, five-year contract that starts in 2017.

Belt, 27, reached a $6.2-million, one-year agreement in February, and General Manager Bobby Evans remained optimistic the sides would reach a long-term deal.

Belt would have been eligible for free agency after the 2017 season. He batted .280 with 18 home runs and 68 RBIs last year.

The San Diego Padres put opening-day pitcher Tyson Ross on the 15-day disabled list because of inflammation in his right shoulder. The move is retroactive to Tuesday.

Right-hander James Shields, moving up a spot in the rotation but pitching on his normal rest, will start Sunday’s series finale against the Colorado Rockies. He’ll be followed by Andrew Cashner on Monday at Philadelphia and reliever Robbie Erlin will make a spot start Tuesday.

Mets starter Jacob deGrom might bypass next turn

New York Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom might not take his next turn in the rotation because of a sore muscle in his right side.

DeGrom won the Mets’ home opener Friday.

Manager Terry Collins said that DeGrom was sore Saturday.

Collins said the right-hander did not have an MRI exam.
