Hayden Moore threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score in his starting debut, and Cincinnati’s struggling defense held on for a 34-23 victory over visiting Miami on Thursday night to end the Hurricanes’ 10-game winning streak over the Bearcats.

The redshirt freshman followed up the best passing game in Cincinnati history with a solid performance. The Bearcats (3-2) surged ahead 14-3 and overcame a scoreless third quarter behind Moore, who completed 22 of 33 passes for 279 yards with an interception.

Moore filled in with Gunner Kiel sidelined by a neck injury suffered during a 53-46 loss at Memphis a week earlier. Moore took over in that game and threw for a school-record 557 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions in only three quarters.

Miami (3-1) was coming off a 36-33 win over Nebraska that featured five field goals by Michael Badgley. He made three more Thursday but missed from 51 and 53 yards as the Hurricanes repeatedly failed to reach the end zone.

Game on ... for now

Clemson athletic department officials say everything is a still on schedule for Saturday’s game between No. 6 Notre Dame and the 12th-ranked Tigers, although they are keeping a close watch on Hurricane Joaquin in the Atlantic Ocean.

Clemson said in a statement Thursday that university officials have been in contact with the National Weather Service and the Atlantic Coast Conference. At the moment, everything is scheduled as planned.

Officials said in the statement, “We intend to continue on that path unless authorities advise us otherwise.” Should that occur, the athletic department will immediately inform the public.

Forecasts call for up to an inch of rain on Saturday night. Kickoff is schedule for 8 p.m. EDT. Saturday’s Maryland-Michigan game was been rescheduled to noon EDT from 8 p.m.

Etc.

Texas Christian senior defensive end Mike Tuaua and freshman receiver Andre Petties-Wilson have been reinstated and will be eligible to play against Texas on Saturday. The players were arrested last week on charges of robbery-bodily injury after another TCU student told Fort Worth police investigators that the players stole a case of beer while attacking him and his friends. The players missed the last three games after the Sept. 4 incident. Coach Gary Patterson said the players had “gone through the judicial process,” although a Fort Worth police spokesman said the case hasn’t been forwarded to Tarrant County prosecutors.

Southern’s Devon Gales is in good spirits despite a paralyzing neck injury, a friend of the family said Thursday. Gales broke his sixth cervical vertebra while blocking on a kickoff return in Saturday’s game at Georgia. Though his body movement is limited mostly to wrists, shoulders and biceps, Gales is telling family members and friends that he hopes to make a full recovery. Spinal cord specialist Brock Bowman, Gales’ attending physician at the Shepherd Center, expects he will be hospitalized at least eight weeks.
