Next start is up in the air for Rockies’ Ubaldo Jimenez

The Colorado Rockies plan to take a cautious approach with the cracked cuticle on Ubaldo Jimenez’s pitching hand.

Manager Jim Tracy said Tuesday he hasn’t ruled the right-hander out of a scheduled start Friday in Pittsburgh, but won’t make any definitive decisions until Jimenez tosses a bullpen session Wednesday — his hand willing, of course.

In Friday’s opener, Jimenez couldn’t generate spin on his breaking pitches, giving up six runs — five earned — in six innings against Arizona.

Cardinals’ Holliday runs, plays catch

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday played catch and ran a few sprints, four days after having an appendectomy and said the big test will be swinging a bat, which he might try to do Wednesday.

Holliday said he assumes he’ll be on a 10-game West Coast trip the Cardinals start Friday at San Francisco.

Marlins’ Stanton on hold

Florida Marlins slugger Mike Stanton probably will remain out of the starting lineup until at least Friday because of a slight strain in his left hamstring, but he will not go on the disabled list, the team said.

Stanton hasn’t played since leaving the season opener Friday after five innings because of the injury. He underwent an MRI exam Monday, and Manager Edwin Rodriguez described the results as good news because the injury isn’t serious.

Rodriguez said Stanton is at 65% to 70% and improving slowly.
