Matt Kenseth wins NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Texas

Matt Kenseth had a dominating run at Texas, breaking a 76-race NASCAR Sprint Cup winless streak Saturday night in Fort Worth.

Kenseth led 169 of 334 laps at the 11/2 -mile, high-banked track for his 19th career victory, his first since California in February 2009.

Kenseth went back ahead to stay with 13 laps to go when Kurt Busch had to make his final stop and give up a 8.2-second lead. Kenseth finished 8.315 seconds ahead of Clint Bowyer.

Kenseth led nine different times and won with an average speed of 149.234 mph. The race featured 31 lead changes among 13 drivers.

All four of Roush’s drivers finished in the top seven. Carl Edwards finished third.

After a runner-up finish last week at Martinsville, Dale Earnhardt Jr. had another strong run and finished ninth. But his winless streak was extended to 100 races since winning in Michigan nearly three years ago. Kurt Busch, who led five times for 50 laps, finished 10th.

Minnesota Duluth wins hockey title

Kyle Schmidt scored 3:22 into overtime to give Minnesota Duluth a 3-2 victory over Michigan in the NCAA ice hockey championship game at St. Paul, Minn., earning the Bulldogs their first national title.

Travis Oleksuk pulled Wolverines goalie Shawn Hunwick to the side and, from behind the net, fed Schmidt for a blink-of-the-eye tap-in to hand Michigan Coach Red Berenson his first loss in a championship game.

Oleksuk and Max Tardy had second-period goals for Minnesota Duluth (26-10-6), which hadn’t played for the championship since losing in four overtimes to Bowling Green in 1984.

Japan’s Kei Nishikori held off Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas, 6-3, 7-5 on Saturday in the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships at Houston to reach the second final of his ATP career.

Nishikori, the winner in 2008 at Delray Beach, will face American Ryan Sweeting on Sunday. Sweeting, a wild-card entry, advanced to his first ATP final with a 7-6 (3) 6-3 victory over Croatia’s Ivo Karlovic.

Caroline Wozniacki broke Jelena Jankovic’s serve five times in a 6-4, 6-4 semifinal victory at the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, S.C. Wozniacki will take on unseeded Elena Vesnina in Sunday’s title match.

Vesnina, 56th in the world, defeated China’s Peng Shuai, 7-6 (4), 6-3 to advance.

Svetlana Kuznetsova was upset by Irina-Camelia Begu, 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4, and the Romanian will play in her first WTA Tour final against top-seeded Victoria Azarenka in the Andalucian Tennis Experience at Marbella, Spain. Azarenka beat eighth-seeded Sara Errani of Italy, 6-2, 6-1, in the other semifinal.

Pablo Andujar upset top-seeded Albert Montanes, 6-4, 6-4, reaching the Grand Prix Hassan II final at Casablanca, Morocco, and staying on course for his first career title. The Spaniard will play fifth-seeded Potito Starace of Italy, who beat Victor Hanescu of Romania, 6-1, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (2), in the final.

Tampa Bay Lightning assistant coach Wayne Fleming is recovering from an operation to remove a brain tumor. The team said in a statement that Fleming underwent surgery Thursday. Doctors are waiting for test results to determine further treatment. The team said the depth of Fleming’s involvement in the postseason will be based on his level of comfort.

Will Power is on the pole again for the IndyCar Grand Prix of Alabama. Power claimed his second pole in two races this season and second straight at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, posting a fast lap of 1 minute 11.46 seconds. He will start on the inside of the front row Sunday, next to Penske teammate Ryan Briscoe.

Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel won the pole position for the Formula One Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang. The defending world champion qualified a tenth of a second ahead of McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton, with Red Bull’s Mark Webber in third and McLaren’s Jenson Button fourth.

The University of Florida has honored the school’s three Heisman Trophy winners with life-sized statues outside the school’s football stadium in Gainesville. The Gators unveiled bronze likenesses of Steve Spurrier (1966), Danny Wuerffel (1996) and Tim Tebow (2007) on Saturday during halftime of the team’s spring game.

Michael Phelps won his third event at the Michigan Grand Prix at Ann Arbor, beating Ryan Lochte in the 100 backstroke in a pool-record 54.15 seconds. The victory came after Phelps struggled in the 200 butterfly, finishing fourth in 1:57.79. China’s Wu Peng won in 1:56.62.

The Washington Mystics acquired All-Star forward/center Nicky Anosike from the Minnesota Lynx, who received the Mystics’ first-round pick in the 2012 draft.
