Update: Chivas USA slipped to seventh place in the West after Wednesday night’s 1-0 loss at Portland. Despite impressive attacking moments by Marcos Mondaini and Laurent Courtois, Chivas could not find the tying goal. Goalkeeper Dan Kennedy made a series of first-class saves, stopping shots that should have been prevented by Chivas defenders. Three Chivas defenders: Michael Umana of Costa Rica, Ante Jazic of Canada and Heath Pearce of the U.S., have been called into camp by their respective national teams for games on Sept. 2 and 6. A fourth defender, Zarek Valentin, is injured and will sit out Saturday’s game. Forward Juan Pablo Angel returns after being rested for the Portland match. Real Salt Lake, coming off a 3-2 loss to the Houston Dynamo and listing no fewer than 12 players with varying degrees of injury, shut out Chivas, 1-0, in Utah in May on an 87th-minute goal by Canadian international Will Johnson.
